A common difficulty of talented young research fellows nowadays is how to sort out the overabundance of data and information and develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. Mentors can play a critical role in helping those with an intellectual curiosity; they help the mentee ask worthy questions and find useful answers. As a first-generation college and medical school graduate, the travel through the world of academia was often a series of blind turns, and mentors have always played an important role in my life. I’ve learned a lot from my own mentors who were instrumental in shaping me, and I share what I’ve learned with my mentees.
